Chapter 1 – Lecture on Teleportation Circles

Professor Maurice examined the paper, his expression serious.

His eyes sparkled with curiosity, reminding Wataru of his scholarly nature.

“I never imagined that we would discover a new teleportation circle. Did you find this?”

“Yes.”

“Hmm… This is strange. But since you came to consult me about it, it must be true.”

“It’s definitely genuine. Is it really that strange?”

“Fufufu, it is strange.”

Wataru was startled by Maurice’s gaze.

This man knows a lot.

That’s why he noticed so many things about Wataru just by talking to him.

Wataru couldn’t imagine how much Maurice had deduced or how certain he was based on this alone.

The difference in knowledge between them was overwhelming.

In situations like this, he must not allow himself to be questioned.

It was essential for him to be the one gathering information.

Since his purpose today was to listen, Wataru decided to continue asking questions.

“From what you’re saying, this teleportation circle is different from the conventional ones. How are they different?”

“There are two types of teleportation circles. It is speculated that their effects differ depending on the content written in the divine characters. Simply put, some can only be used between specific circles, while others connect multiple circles.”

“I see. Which one is this?”

“That’s what makes it so mysterious.”

He couldn’t tell Wataru that the characters were different because they were connected to a different world.

Wataru thought about the difference between a station where you can transfer to multiple lines and one where you can’t.

It was difficult to understand when thinking of teleportation circles as fantastical entities, but since the mechanism itself was the same as in modern Japan, it was easy.

“Professor, could you tell me more about teleportation circles?”

“Teleportation circles are a means of transportation created by the gods. It is said that everyone used them from ancient times until the early ancient period.”

“What are the Age of the Gods and the Ancient Era?”

“Don’t you know anything about history?”

Maurice’s exasperated expression made the professor feel uncomfortable.

It was probably a question taught in compulsory education.

“I’m sorry. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to study history. I’ll go to the library and study it later.”

“My master was born in a foreign country, so he doesn’t know anything about this. But that doesn’t mean…”

“No, no. ‘Ignorance’ and ‘uneducated’ are different. Those who come to ask questions because they want to learn are ‘ignorant.’ But those who have spent their lives researching things that pique their curiosity cannot be called ‘uneducated.’ They have a desire to learn. I despise the uneducated, but not the ignorant.”

Hearing these profound words, Wataru bowed his head in respect.

When writing, he makes sure to research as much as possible, and when conducting interviews, he prepares in advance.

It’s hard not to lose your temper with someone who comes to consult you without doing any research beforehand.

Instead of being scolded, Wataru was impressed by the words of approval he heard, and he felt a sense of respect for this person.

“I’m sorry,”

“You shouldn’t be surprised. I’m just a professor. Teaching the necessity of studying is just position talk. Listen to half of what I say.”

Maurice laughed childishly.

“Now,” he began, continuing his lecture.

“Long ago, gods lived in this land. The period before they departed is called the Age of the Gods. The era that followed is called ancient times. During this period, many technologies and ruins were left behind. Ancient times is further divided into three periods: early, middle, and late. The modern era began when countries around the world started governing themselves rather than being governed by the gods. The present day is called the modern era.”

Maurice wrote the lecture content on a piece of paper.

It was written as “Age of the Gods,” “Ancient Times,” and “Modern Era,” which were then further subdivided.

Incidentally, alchemy seems to be a key point in the transition from the modern era to the present day.

It would be a good idea to look into this later.

This is essential knowledge for Wataru, who is involved in potions and enchantments.

“That was very clear. So, teleportation circles fell into disuse even in ancient times.”

“That’s right. At a certain point, fewer people could use them, and now only a few can.”

“Why did that happen?”

“In the age of the gods, there were many more races in the world than there are now. Among them were races that were very slow, such as the turtle race. The god of time and space took pity on them and placed teleportation circles around the world to serve as a means of transportation. However, conflicts over the use of teleportation circles became widespread in the Middle Ages. Angered by their misuse, the gods imposed restrictions on the circles. They used their magic to limit who could use them.”

“So, are there still people who can use them?”

“Yes, but they are few and far between. They are magicians, ancient people who have passed down the knowledge from generation to generation, people who have been given a mission by the gods, and people who are on a pilgrimage.”

“That’s more than I expected. I’m surprised.”

“I think only a few of them can use the teleportation circles. Well, there are exceptions to everything.”

Maurice narrowed his eyes and stared at Wataru, who smiled ambiguously and remained vague, feeling a jolt.

Since Wataru had consulted Maurice about the teleportation circles, he was undoubtedly aware of them.

However, it was still unknown how much he could use them and whether he could detect other locations.

He couldn’t give a clear answer.

“Are there any precautions to take when using the teleportation circle?”

“The important thing is not to go against the will of the gods. The god of time and space wants them to be used to save people and for good deeds.”

“That’s difficult. Good deeds, you say?”

“You have no choice but to listen to your conscience. Only the gods know the answer.”

It is unclear what the gods consider good or evil.

Wataru uses the teleportation circle primarily to make money, and so far, he has been able to do so.

Why is this allowed?

Is it because he isn’t causing trouble for others?

There are still many things he doesn’t understand, and there is still a risk that it will suddenly become unusable in the future.

“I understand very well. Could you please explain the difference between this teleportation circle and the others one more time?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know…?”

“If you have any more information about the teleportation circle, please let me know. I am researching the age of the gods, but I don’t understand the teleportation circle.”

“I understand. If I notice anything else, I will consult with you again.”

Wataru bowed deeply.

He had learned more than he had expected.

After asking everything he wanted to know, Wataru hurriedly got up from his seat and left with Mariel and Aire.

Maurice had another appointment and didn’t have time to talk at length.

“Oh, right. There’s almost certainly a teleportation circle in the capital. You should look for it. But even if I wanted to tell you, I don’t know where it is.”

Before leaving the room, Wataru bowed deeply once more to thank Maurice for his advice.

  1. I don’t know if trading in sugar and healing potions is considered to be a good enough deed. Everything you do helps some people and inconveniences other people. More sugar means more luxury for the nobles like cakes and other foods requiring it, but also more caries and the risk of diabetes if not careful. Healing potions obviously keep people healthy but also mean respectively less work for the conventional medicine practitioners.
