Chapter 4 – A Place Called The Magic City of Ist
A direct train from the White Rose to the magic city of Ist. Ain is on the train, which has a high fare for nobles. The magic tools he had requested from Majolica had arrived, and the day to leave for Ist with Chris and Dill was now upon them.
If there was one problem, it was…
“Ah, there’s good-nya. Can you rub a little harder-nya?”
Katima suddenly announced her participation. However, no magic tools were prepared for her, and so she suggested her own.
“I never thought you’d hide in my luggage until we got on the water train.”
“I’ll even disguise myself before arriving at Ist. So you can rest assured… oh, there-nya.”
As if to express her sympathy for the trouble she had gone through to get here, Ain stroked Katima’s neck.
The sight of Katima’s delight is genuinely that of a domestic cat. Doesn’t she have any pride? The way she slumped down on the sofa in the lounge of the rented cabin, ecstatic at the movement of Ain’s hands, was quite a joke.
“And yet, how convenient is this magic tool?”
It’s a robe specially made by Majolica that they removed as soon as they entered the vehicle.
“Ain-sama, Ain-sama. There are not many craftsmen as good as Majolica-san, you know?”
“Even though he’s dressed like that?”
“…Even though he’s dressed like that, yes.”
The two of them looked at each other and let out a sigh.
“By the way, Katima-san, I’m surprised that grandfather gave you his permission.”
“I have a reward that I was supposed to receive as well-nya. I’ve been working on the book about the Demon King for a while now, and I’ve gotten a lot of credit for researching and compiling it into a book-nya. I’ve decided to use it and follow you to Ist this time-nya.”
As a princess, Katima couldn’t be expected to leave the capital often, and her visit to Ist was a boon for her as a researcher.
“Fufufu. I’m looking forward to it-nya.”
“Don’t get too excited; we still have a long way to go.”
“I know-nya! Geez! You think I’m a child or something, don’t you-nya?”
“No, it’s just too noisy ─ No, it’s nothing.”
Swallowing his words just in time, Ain smiled and looked out the window. On this occasion, he and Chris crossed gazes and understood each other’s intentions.
It was evening when they left the White Rose, and the water train was scheduled to arrive the following day. The cabin was designed for nobility, and there were enough bedrooms for everyone. Some time after dinner, everyone went to their bedrooms to rest.
Suddenly, Ain woke up. He looked at his watch and saw that it was midnight. He felt thirsty and had trouble sleeping, so he got up.
“…I better go to the lounge.”
Maybe he could get something to drink. There are a lot of drinks served on the train.
He opened the door of his bedroom and stepped out into the corridor. Looking out the window from the corridor, he noticed the lights dotted around the dark landscape.
Shortly after immersing himself in the different atmosphere of the royal capital, Ain opened the door to the lounge.
“Huh? What’s wrong, Ain-sama?”
It was Chris, who had arrived before Ain.
Unlike her on duty, she greeted Ain with a soft, unctuous smile.
“I’m a little thirsty; how about you, Chris-san?”
“Yeah, I am actually the same.”
Chris answered as she sat down at the bar space set up in the corner of the lounge. She was not dressed in her armor or knight’s uniform as usual but a sleeveless blouse and tight pants underneath. She had a great sense of style.
“If you don’t mind, would you like to join me for a bit?”
Chris, in her casual clothes, was very different from usual. Even when she held a glass in her hand, her movements were sexy. The long, thin legs folded under the table were the same.
It’s not that Chris, in her knight’s outfit, is not attractive. However, Ain nodded a little, thinking that maybe the current Chris was her true self.
“Can I sit next to you then?”
“Yes, of course. I’ll get you a drink.”
She got up in front of him and went to get him a drink.
“What would you like to drink, Ain-sama?”
“I’d like some cold fruit water. What was Chris-san drinking… Oh, hot wine?”
“It helps me sleep more easily. But I’ll get you some fruit water, Ain-sama.”
A beautiful blonde elf sits next to him in a slightly trendy bar. But what the man asks for is fruit water. Ain smiled bitterly, thinking that it was not very cool.
“I’m sorry to keep you waiting. Here you go.”
She appeared from the side, placed the drink in front of Ain, and sat next to him. The sweet smell coming from her neck was a little irresistible.
Ain looked out the window.
“We’re on a bridge, huh?”
Is this the ocean or a river? It’s a huge stretch of water that is indistinguishable from either the ocean or the river. There is no end in sight for this incredibly long bridge.
“This area is a brackish water area. The river you can see below is one of the widest on the continent, and the bridge we’re on is the longest in Ishtalika.”
“I see. So that’s why you can’t see what’s ahead…”
Ain sipped his glass.
As soon as he had quenched his thirst, Chris added.
“I think this is the first time I’ve had a chance to talk to you like this, Ain-sama.”
Chris picked up her glass of hot wine and talked to Ain while looking at it.
When Ain looked at her face from the side, he saw that her cheeks were a little redder than usual, probably because of the hot wine.
“Come to think of it, you’re right. We’ve had a lot of opportunities to work together, but this might be the first time.”
“It’s been many years. Since that day we met in the port town of Roundheart.”
“It’s been a long time. I was wary of you at first, right?”
“Fufu, that’s right. The way you acted that day still has a reputation among the royal knights.”
“Eh, wait… what about that?”
“To be honest, the royal knights were not sure what kind of child Ain-sama was. Even though Olivia-sama occasionally sends reports of her recent condition to Ishtalika, it is still impossible to know without actually seeing you in person.”
The fact that there was a bad impression of Heim cannot be denied. There was also confusion about dealing with Ain, who inherited the blood of Logas, no matter the fact that he was Olivia’s son.
At the time, the people of Ishtalika must have had a hard time. Ain could see that and was ruminating on the memories of the many inconveniences he had caused.
Chris rubbed her eyelids sleepily next to him.
(Could it be that she was about to go to bed when I arrived?)
If so, he had done something wrong.
“Chris-san, if you’re sleepy, you can──.”
“Don’t worry! I’m not particularly sleepy!”
“There’s no need to be so uptight…”
When he looked into Chris’s eyes, who answered in a frustrated tone, the sleepy look in her eyes hadn’t changed.
Ain continued without touching it further.
“Speaking of which, it’s just like a journey, isn’t it?”
“You mean this investigation?”
“Yes. Leaving the castle in disguise feels more like a journey than traveling incognito”.
“Hahaha… Yes. It’s certainly a kind of journey if you ask me.”
“The circumstances are not light, but I never thought I’d be doing something like this.”
Since he was born, his first long trip was from the port city of Roundhart to the royal capital of Heim. Ain remembered that Olivia had said at the time that Ain could travel too.
As soon as Chris saw Ain’s smile, her lips twitched.
“You have important things to do, so don’t overdo the fun, okay?”
“I know. Besides my body, there’s the Red Fox.”
“I know, right? It’s all very important…”
Chris’s eyelids began to droop again.
“Mm… you think I’m sleepy again?”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
“I’ve told you many times that I’m not sleepy…”
Her words had no power.
Seeing how her head has started to wobble, it is clear that she is nearing her limit.
“I know. ──But I’d like to take a journey like this again.”
Regardless of the circumstances, Ain likes to explore.
Ain said these words with this intention. After that, he intended to suggest that they go to bed when he heard Chris…
It was already too late.
What Ain saw was that she was sleeping like a child. Chris used her arms as a pillow and turned her profile to Ain, breathing regularly in her sleep. Her eyes were closed so that her long eyelashes were emphasized, and her upper and lower lips were tinged with hot wine red.
What to do about this situation? It was unthinkable just to leave Chris and walk away. Then, the assumption would be that he would stay here until she woke up or carry her to the bedroom.
“I should carry her then.”
He didn’t want to arrive at Ist in a sleepy state. Chris’s tall body was still a bit big for Ain.
“Whoa, she’s so light.”
Putting his hands on the backs of Chris’s knees and her back, he lifted her and started walking without any difficulty. He walked out to the connecting corridor and opened the door to her bedroom with his foot.
He gently placed her body on the bed where she would have been sleeping.
Ain pulled the blanket over Chris’s body and left her bedroom with a small “good night” at the end.
