Maseki Gurume – Vol 3 Chapter 5 Part 5

Here’s the chapter, enjoy~

Part 5

The Tower of Wisdom.

The high level of security is something that even Katima recognizes. It is a facility that has played a central role in the magic city of Ist for a long time, and there is no way to enter it without taking the proper steps.

It’s like a fortress.

When Katima told Ain about the Tower of Wisdom again, he pondered what to do. It would not be an exaggeration to say that comprehensive information management and a strict security system have supported the development of new technologies up to this day.

Ain walked out onto the balcony and asked Katima as he gazed up at the reddish sky.

“How about I use the royal decree to force my way in?”

“You can get in-nya. But what if they try to destroy the evidence-nya?”

“Ah, you’re right…”

“For example, if they incinerate it without a trace, there will be no evidence left-nya. Then it could be judged that the royal decree used by Ain was inappropriate-nya.”

That had to be avoided.

But then there was the question of how to investigate the inside of the Tower of Wisdom.

“Organizing an inspection team to go inside is out of the question. By the time we get into the labs, the evidence will be destroyed.”

The Tower of Wisdom is fifty stories high. It’s a big place, and it’ll take a while to get there using the elevator.

“If you’re going to use the royal decree, why don’t you call Viscount Sage-nya?”

“Once he’s captured, you mean, he won’t be able to contact anyone?”

“Nya.”

“…But he’s been doing a lot of relays to receive his victims, so he seems to be very cautious, doesn’t he? So it seems like he has some kind of countermeasure.”

“You are right-nya. Oh geez, I guess we’ll just have to sneak in-nya.”

“But can we sneak in? That’s the question.”

“The road ahead is difficult-nya.”

From the balcony, the Tower of Wisdom is visible, and although it is not far away, the inside of the tower is isolated, like another world.

When Ain wondered what to do.

“Well, it’s not like there aren’t ways to sneak in-nya.”

Katima said with a grin.

“Ain, do you remember what I told you before-nya? I told you that the Tower of Wisdom relies heavily on the old furnace-nya.”

“I remember, I remember, but what does that have to do with being able to sneak in?”

“There is a connection-nya. Now, let’s go back inside, and I’ll show you something good-nya.”

Ain followed Katima from the balcony back to the lounge, a little anticipation fueling him.

As soon as they returned, Katima went to her own bedroom and returned to Ain’s with a small notebook in her hand.

The two of them sat down on the sofa.

“This is where I write down what I notice at work-nya.”

Then she pointed with her paw to an open page. There were several illustrations carefully drawn on the page.

“It’s very confidential-nya. What you see here is the mechanism of the underground furnace of the Tower of Wisdom-nya.”

“…There’s a tube that extends from a round pool in the basement, and it goes straight to the top of the tower. Each level has its own section.”

“Don’t you understand something-nya? Do you remember of what I said before after you saw it-nya?”

The Tower of Wisdom relies heavily on the old furnace. In addition, according to the diagram Ain just seen, there is only one furnace, so to speak, that provides all the energy.

It’s the same as having only one heart.

“You know, the security inside the Tower of Wisdom?”

“Of course, all energy sources are concentrated in the underground furnace-nya.”

I see; that’s how it is. Ain understood what Katima was trying to say.

“In other words, the underground furnace…”

“Yes-nya! The furnace in the basement.”

“You want me to destroy the underground furnace?”

“…Don’t be stupid-nya. The damage would be catastrophic-nya.”

Katima shrugged her shoulders in amazement.

She then pointed to one of the illustrations.

“Look closely here-nya.”

It looks like a circular pool filled with some kind of liquid. It was huge and took up most of the underground space.

In the center of the pool, there was a huge device and several pipes stretching toward the ground.

“This is where the melted magic stone is stored-nya. And the liquid is agitated by a screw at the lowest level-nya.”

“What happens when it’s stirred?”

“The liquefied magic stone produces a lot of magic power when it is stirred.”

So, she continued.

“The magic power produced is converted into special energy through a central device ─ a turbine-nya. So if you shut down the turbine, the energy supply in the facility will also stop-nya.”

Katima pointed to the device in the center of the pool.

“I see what you mean. But how do you shut down the turbines?”

“That’s the question-nya. Ain will have to do something about that-nya.”

Ain was stuck at a crucial point. He crossed his arms again, wondering what to do.

“Isn’t there some kind of safety device?”

“The only way to generate enough energy to overheat the turbine is to agitate the liquefied magic stone even more aggressively-nya.”

“So the only way to do that is to turn the screw somehow more aggressively?”

“Mmm… That’s true-nya, but…”

After a few slurred words, she smiled and scratched her cheek.

“The screw’s safety device activates faster than the turbine overheats-nya.”

What should I do about that? Ain held his head.

“The only way to do that is to agitate the liquefied magic stone manually…”

But that’s nearly impossible.

It’s impossible to stir up an unusual amount of liquefied magic stones unless you’re a monster who lives underwater.

“Monster… or monster that lives underwater…”

He seems to have come up with some kind of method. Use Dullahan’s power? No, that’s just sabotage. Or would it be Elder Lich? He hadn’t yet come to an understanding of what kind of skills he could use in the first place, and he couldn’t rely on them this time.

It wasn’t long before he realized that there must have been some other power.

“──There it is. There was only one way to agitate the liquefied magic stone.”

It’s a skill that Ain didn’t have any use for until now, but it’s definitely a skill that Ain got.

He finally saw a clue. Ain naturally raised the corners of his mouth to expose his white teeth.

“Now, all that’s left is how to get to the furnace; what do you think I should do?”

“Wait-nya! What’s the plan?”

“I’ll tell you how to do it later, so take this one first.”

The first thing Ain did was to say the words Katima had prepared for him from the beginning.

“Mumumu… then you can ask the August Trading Company for help-nya. Do you understand what I mean-nya?”

“──Oh, I see. But if that’s the case, why didn’t we just go straight into the upper floors of the Tower of Wisdom from the start?”

“The underground and the research facility are separate paths-nya.”

Ain nodded in acknowledgment.

“If you try too hard, the alarms will go off, and you’ll be able to use the elevator that leads to the upper floors-nya. The nobleman’s laboratory is on the twentieth floor; I believe-nya.”

“Hmm, I understand. I think I’ll go straight to the August Trading Company and ask for help from Graff-san.”

Then, Ain stood up from the sofa vigorously.

“When Chris-san comes out of the bath, the two of us will go see Graff-san. I’ll ask him to cooperate with us there.”

Ain’s face was as determined and confident as it had been during the Sea Dragon incident.

A few dozen minutes later.

When Chris came out of the bathroom, she had a glow that Ain had never seen before. Her cheeks were flushed with moisture from sweat. Her hair was beautiful and straight, not in a ponytail as usual. Her beauty made Ain think that she didn’t need makeup.

When she hears about Ain’s story, she naturally disagrees.

“I will handle it. I’m not going to let Ain-sama go there, okay?”

“…I knew you would say that.”

“Of course. Geez!”

If it were just a joke, Ain would never have told such a joke.

“It’s just a matter of me sneaking in by myself.”

“If you say so, I’m in trouble… Hmm.”

“If it’s not good, it’s not good!”

If this happens, there is nothing he can do about it.

“Well, well, both of you need to calm down a little-nya. ──By the way, Chris, I heard from Ain that you’re concerned about the Wyvern’s physical appearance-nya?”

“Y-yes… although the unnaturally raised muscles were unfamiliar to me.”

And what’s wrong with that? Said Chris.

Katima grinned at Chris, who was puzzled.

“I see-nya; I see-nya. It was unnatural, wasn’t it-nya?”

Her face looks like she’s planning something.

Ain, who was standing next to her, had known her for a long time and knew that well. In fact, they’ve plotted together on several occasions.

What is she up to? Ain asks as he searches for the answer in her words.

(Unnatural Wyvern…)

At the same time, he thought about his purpose for coming to Ist. He thought about his condition and the Red Fox. And.

“So that’s it. I remember Majolica-san telling me about it.”

The Red Fox can strengthen and manipulate monsters.

“Um, Ain-sama? What’s the matter…?”

Ain looked at Chris, whose cheeks were tight, and thought…

This is it! Ain noticed Katima’s help and exchanged glances with her.

After taking a deep breath, Ain opened his mouth to try to convince Chris.

  1. This sneaking in plan is not only extremely complicated, but entirely unnecessary. They already have that professor who seems to be pretty high ranking, so why not just fill him in on what they suspect and have him get them in? It’s not like he’s involved in the kidnappings, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense for him to even give them the case.
